When you unveil a new product there are always a few moments of tension. It’s natural, knowing you’ve spend the better part of two years thinking about, planning and visualizing it in your head. When we started showing journalists, agents, clients and partners into the new Yasuragi by Odin it was no different. But looking at the incredible reactions of most visitors, we can now breathe with relief. We’ve gotten more than our fair share of superlatives about the ski lounge (pictured above), the stairs, entrance doors, the spas in each loft, the cozy rooms…and of course the views of Yotei. Already one loft has been sold and delivered, and another one reserved just within the first two weeks of release. Needless to say, Odin is thrilled with the reaction – which is boosting our motivation for the next project which is going to turn a few heads in Hirafu. Enough said.

Yasuragi by Odin has officially opened. Five, brand-new, beautiful mountain-lofts. And it’s happened right in the middle of some of the best snowfalls in Niseko, ever. And if you’ve been here before you can probably begin to grasp what that means. It basically means lots of snow. Lots. Powder delight. Train-loads. And with Yasuragi by Odin now open with its incredible spas on the balconies, owners are taking full advantage of the season without shame.

Niseko is magic.

The construction of Yasuragi by Odin launched early this summer is now accelerating. The steel structure is rising from the ground at blazing speed amid a meticulous choreography of workers balancing on beams and a whirl of steel-laden delivery trucks. Meanwhile, the Chinese-South African interior design team is busy putting the finishing touches to the delicate combination of timber, stone and steel that will give the living spaces the distinctive spirit of Odin. We’re all waiting impatiently for roof and walls to be finished before the season turns to autumn and winter again.

Since early June, earth has been moved in Hirafu lower village around the site of Odin’s latest launch: Yasuragi by Odin. Continuing the philosophy of “intelligent luxury” and designed by Atelier BNK in Sapporo, Yasuragi is conceived around a unique Japanese spa-bath concept created to be a veritable sanctuary for body and soul. When it opens in early 2011, five loft-style apartments will be delivered to their owners. Following the significant press-coverage of Odin House in Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong and China, expectations seem to have climbed and the Odin team is elated at the thought of delivering new ideas and fresh thinking with this latest creation.

Having reviewed four full-scale prototypes of the Odin Chair side-by-side two weeks ago, we think we’re almost there. We’ve settled on an honest powder coated aluminum-alloy finishing for the legs, and a gorgeous sandwiched oak structure for the curved seat base and back rest. The unique construction of the chair is definitely living up to our own lofty expectations. But also it’s been quite fun watching five or six craftsmen swarming around the chair as if it were a Formula One racing car hitting the pitstop. Unprompted orders came in last week via the website from the USA and Germany, even before we’ve officialised any formal sales channels.

Odin House is ready. There’s a fireplace in the living room, water in the spa, wine in the chiller and snow on the roof. Just about every one of our friendly competitors has sent us a gentlemanly note of appreciation for raising the bar and we have been flattered. Odin House is one of the most ambitious residential projects in Hokkaido, and even perhaps one of the most ambitious in all of Japan. It took an enormous amount of sweat, hours and passion to get it done. But actually, the fun has only just begun.

As the summer subtly begins its turn towards cooler autumn nights, the steel frame of Odin’s largest residence has reached completion. The earthquake-proof structure has received wide coverage in Japan’s architectural trade press, including the June issue of “KenchikuGijutsu” magazine, where its computer simulations have been hailed as one of Japan’s most significant residential engineering projects. Now the race is on to dress the frame in time for the first snowflakes to sweep in over Niseko later in the year.
